Born 1970, Denmark Thomas Hylander studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, England 1999 - 2001 and at the Royal College of Art in London 2003 - 2004. He currently lives and works in London, UK.
His stained and sparsely detailed canvases are almost archaeological in their ambition to delve into the past, exhuming images from memory. Objects seem to hover at the brink of decay or disappearance. Paint is applied to the canvas in quick intense bursts and scratched or washed of again revealing the layered process of the paintings creation.
The surfaces has a worn, lived in quality. The overall effect is that of time recorded on canvas. Suggesting also the failures of recollection; the past is not fixed but continually changing revealing more or less detail depending on how and where you shine your torch.
Hylander makes enigmatic hybrids of traditional genres like landscape, portraiture, interiors and stillifes.
A good example of this is the painting Television in wich the last light of the television, beeing turned of, is painted to appear as an organic floral explosion. The painting holding on to the flicker of light and making it tangible for all to see. Hylander´s whimsical, quixotic search for lost time finds glimpses of wonder in the murk of memory.
