JACOB NOEL
"Displace me Somewhere else"
March 14. - April 12.
“Displace me somewhere else” is the title of an exhibition by Jacob Noel. His first show at henningsen contemporary. Jacob Noel presents us with monochrome stamped paperwork. The motive is a bonsai tree repeated in an infinite flow of piled up imprints of the stamp. It creates a quivering image with distinct references to meditation of Zen Buddhism. From a distance they are unreadable patterns and up close they are arabesques with the outlines of the bonsai tree. It is about being there, about presence, and about emptiness. He fills the surface of the paper entirely, or creates a circle in the middle of it, using only one colour he creates an image or pattern that can’t be read. Close in on, and the paper the viewer sees the tree and realizes that the rhythm in the structure comes from the repeated motif of the bonsai tree. It provides a meditative calmness to look at the surface.
Your Moment of Zen
The code to the work of art – what is it about? The works of Jacob Noel are not really about anything. There is no code or maybe you have it already? Because as soon as you accept that his work does not need a code or a manual, then you realize that they in fact have a meaning but that they are so simple that they do not need a code. You got it already. It is about quietness and about being there, and if that is not enough, then try to look again until it floats in a simple state of calmness: Your moment of Zen
Moments
The second part of the exhibition is a series of light boxes, Moments 1 – 7. In the front of the boxes a light shines through with the help of laser cut lines. The subjects are architectural fragments of interlacing ground plans and elevations of already existing buildings. When the viewer moves past the light boxes the expression changes because the light transforms and the architectural spaces and perspectives become some kind of chaotic sense impression with displacements of mental and physical currents. They are interlacing ground plans and elevations of existing buildings and that becomes dream architecture. They are ground plans of new architectural landscapes which have already been set foot on.
