“On the Shoulders of Giants”
April 16. – May 15. 2010
"On the Shoulders of Giants" is Troels Aagaard's second solo exhibition at the gallery. The title of this exhibition, has in the same way as his first exhibition, ’Breaking the fourth wall’ been chosen for its evocative language which, can be read on multiple levels.
The suggestive titles become catalysts for visual associations. Although the works denounce the representation, it is, these exact linguistic connotations that give an indication of content beyond the purely aesthetical to the viewer.
Troels Aagaard influences are respectfully both old and new giants of the artworld, ranging from Nicolas Poussin to Robert Morris to Paul Gadegaard. However this does not distract from the contemporary appearance of the works, and the paintings in the exhibition evidently belong to the artist’s present universe. This is manifested in the interest in structures and systems, rather than a deconstruction or displacement of these mostly spatial, pseudo-scientific or auditory structures.
Aagaard's interest in the contrast of the three-dimensional and plane surfaces become apparent in several of the works. As with the previous exhibition, his works break out of the frame.
The paintings object-like appearance is also emphasized by the structure which, winds, curves and protrudes. They can not be referred to as ordinary paintings, but appear as a combination of bastardized elements. |
